Best/most popular/favorite social event being run this year:
VA (also known as Vertical Alcohol), held in November, it is our best-attended cabaret of the year. First year representatives choose the theme and organize the cabaret (some in year’s past include: Vector Avengers, Voluptuous Asymptote etc.).
Best/most popular/favorite non-social event being run this year:
FSYD and TFYD – The first and second, third and fourth year dinners. Both held at the Palliser Hotel in downtown Calgary. Around 300 people attend including students, sponsors and members of industry. A cabaret follows both dinners.
CFES involvement (recent events/officers, future plans)
Discussion has been made about holding a CE course at the U of C, decision is still up in the air.
WESST involvement (recent events/executives, future plans)
Plan to hold WEC after Saskatchewan and Alberta, possibility of bidding on the next WESST retreat.
Things we are trying new this year:
Frosh week tradition change: Our frosh week logistics are changing to attract more frosh students and promote camaraderie among the students. Instead of a departmental competition, we are making blocks of frosh students compete for winning frosh week, giving them block names and colors with the promise of a Kegger for the winning block.
Tap the Town: A frosh week event replacing the traditional cabaret at a club. Basically we are doing a Drink a Small town dry on the first Friday. Sending approximately 150 people by bus.
HA- Like Vertical Alcohol but another cabaret in the second semester.
POETS was a disaster last year, attendance was only a handful of students each Friday, partly to outrageous beer prices from chartwells and student apathy. We are cutting back the number of POETS events to once or twice a month and putting more effort into each of the events.
