University of British Columbia
This year, the Engineering Undergraduate Society at the University of British Columbia is excited to embark on many new initiatives. We made giant strides in several areas last year and we are going to build off of that momentum.
The UBC EUS now offers free tutoring for almost all first year engineering courses and many common second year courses. Our VP Academics and Tutoring Coordinator are expanding and refining these review sessions for midterm and final exams. In addition to this, they are working hard to engage the faculty with volunteers taking on an academic advocacy role to improve the curriculum and co-op experience.
Last year UBC hosted an Inter-Faculty Cup where each faculty organized a team to compete in several events. Engineering only made it to second place, but we discovered that the Human Kinetics, Commerce, Arts and Science kids weren’t as bad as we thought, so we’re going to be organizing more joint events throughout the year. This collaborative spirit is also taking over the engineering departments and clubs, several of which have already begun to organize beer gardens or competitions cooperatively. One of the largest of these will be the Engineering Physics and Engineers Without Borders Battle of the Bands. Already an established event, it always draws a good crowd and fun acts.
In 2008 the EUS broke out its first edition of the e-nEUS, an electronic newsletter sent out weekly to all of our constituents. It’s proved to be a great way to get information out about upcoming events, services, and faculty news. Our other communication feat came from the release of our new website this summer. Through these two online mediums, students will always know what is coming up and where to find more details.
For the upcoming year, the VP External and VP Finance will be expanding their portfolios by increasing sponsorship from the industry and setting up a fence rental business. These projects will bring in additional revenue to fund more services. At the upcoming CFES and WESST conferences, the UBC EUS representatives will be looking for different services to offer our constituents. Any questions about what we’ve been doing, or ideas on something we could pick up; send an email to our VP External.
