Here at the University of Alberta Engineering Students’ Society we annually run events and opportunities that focus on building the engineering community on campus. This coming year our ESS is celebrating its 90th birthday. We are all excited for a great year to come and some special birthday celebrations.

headshave

Our largest charity event each year is the Engineering Hairdye and Headshave. Participants dye their hair a strange color the week before the shave to create awareness for the event and raise pledges. This past year about $30,000 was raised for the Alberta Cancer Association. This put the running total up to over $120,000 in the past five years since the event was conceived.

On the social side of things this year we will be holding the 25th and 26th Country Crusade events . Engineering students, nurses and even some UofC engineers will travel to an unspecified small town location for a night of friends, fun and engineering pride.

Also, after a couple years of dormancy, the Alberta Cup Run was revived this past year. The Alberta Cup, a legendary chalice, is passed between the two Albertan universities (UofA and UofC) a few times each year. The university that currently has ownership of the cup will call the rival school which then has 3.5 hours to come retrieve the cup. Parties of epic proportions follow the race. The UofA is excited to continue our friendly rivalry.

Lastly, we are getting revved up for the celebration of National Engineering and Geoscience Week in March. We have a week of professional engineering events planned including a new charity endeavor and a youth outreach day. We look forward to promoting the engineering field on campus and in the community.

That’s all for now, have a great year!
